When to Use Root Tabs Root tabs are solid capsules or tablets pushed deep into the substrate.
- Who Needs Them: Heavy root feeders. If your plant has a massive, thick root system (Amazon Swords, Cryptocoryne, Vallisneria), it wants to pull its food from the soil.
- When They Are Mandatory: If you are using an inert substrate like plain gravel or sand, root tabs are an absolute necessity. Without them, root feeders will eventually starve. If you are using a fresh, active aqua soil, you do not need root tabs for the first 8 to 12 months.
When to Use Liquid Fertilizers Liquid fertilizers are poured directly into the water column.
- Who Needs Them: Epiphytes (plants attached to wood, like Anubias and Java Fern), floating plants, aquatic mosses, and fast-growing stem plants. These plants absorb the majority of their nutrients directly through their leaves.
- When They Are Mandatory: Even with the best aqua soil in the world, the water column will eventually become depleted of micronutrients and potassium. A high-quality, all-in-one liquid fertilizer ensures your water column feeders stay vibrant and healthy.
The Verdict: For most aquascapes, a hybrid approach is best. Use a nutrient-rich substrate for your rooted plants, and dose a lean liquid fertilizer to keep your stems and epiphytes fed.
