There is a persistent myth that planted tanks require hours of grueling daily maintenance. The truth? A well-planned planted aquarium is often easier to maintain than a traditional fish-only setup with plastic plants.
The Low-Tech Approach If you choose slow-growing epiphytes like Anubias, Java Fern, and Bucephalandra, your maintenance will be incredibly minimal. Because these plants grow slowly, they don’t require frequent trimming. The live plants actively consume fish waste (nitrates) and oxygenate the water, naturally creating a more stable, healthy ecosystem. In a balanced low-tech tank, your main tasks are a simple weekly or bi-weekly water change and scraping a little algae off the glass.
The High-Tech Approach High-tech tanks—featuring intense lighting, CO2 injection, and fast-growing stem plants—do require more active management. Because the plants grow incredibly fast, you will need to dedicate time every week to trimming, replanting tops, and dosing liquid fertilizers.
Ultimately, the difficulty level is entirely up to you. If you design the tank to match your lifestyle and maintenance preferences from day one, keeping a planted aquarium is a highly relaxing and rewarding experience.
