Starting your first planted tank can feel overwhelming, but breaking it down step-by-step makes it an incredibly rewarding process. Here is a beginner-friendly guide to getting your ecosystem up and running.
- Choose the Right Tank and Location: Start with a 10 to 20-gallon tank. Counterintuitively, smaller tanks (like 5 gallons) are actually harder to maintain because water parameters fluctuate rapidly. Keep the tank away from direct sunlight to prevent aggressive algae growth.
- Add Substrate and Hardscape: Pour in an active aqua soil for the best plant growth. Arrange your hardscape—driftwood and rocks—before adding any water. This is the time to experiment and build your layout.
- Planting: Plant heavily from day one. Use aquascaping tweezers to push stem plants deep into the soil. Attach epiphytes to your driftwood or rocks using superglue gel (cyanoacrylate) or cotton thread.
- Fill and Filter: Place a plastic bag or a small plate over the substrate and pour water slowly over it to avoid disturbing your layout. Turn on your filter and heater.
- The Cycle: Do not add fish yet! Your tank needs 3 to 6 weeks to cycle and establish beneficial bacteria. Use a good liquid fertilizer and keep your lights on for only 6 to 8 hours a day initially to combat new-tank algae.
Patience is the secret ingredient to any successful planted aquarium.
