How to Prepare New Plants Before Adding Them to Your Tank

Dropping a brand-new plant directly from a shipping box into your pristine aquascape is a gamble. Without proper preparation, you risk introducing pest snails, algae spores, and even harmful pathogens to your tank. Taking 15 minutes to properly prep your plants can save you months of headaches.

Step 1: Remove the Packaging If your plant arrives in a plastic pot, carefully remove it. You will see the roots wrapped in a fuzzy material called rockwool. Gently tease the rockwool apart with your fingers or tweezers under running water until the roots are completely bare. If it is a tissue culture plant, rinse off all the nutrient gel under lukewarm water—leaving the gel on can cause a massive bacterial bloom.

Step 2: The Dip To eliminate pests, you need to perform a plant dip.

  • The Bleach Dip: Mix 1 part unscented household bleach with 19 parts water. Dip sturdy plants (like Anubias or Java Fern) for 90 to 120 seconds. Delicate plants (like mosses or Vallisneria) should only be dipped for 60 seconds.
  • The Alum Dip: For a gentler alternative, dissolve 1-3 tablespoons of Alum powder (found in the baking aisle) in a gallon of water and soak the plants for up to 3 hours. This is highly effective at killing snail eggs.

Step 3: The Dechlorination Soak After the dip, rinse the plants thoroughly under tap water. Then, soak them in a bucket of heavily dechlorinated water for at least 15 minutes to neutralize any residual bleach before planting them in your display tank.
