Do You Need Liquid Fertilizer for a Planted Tank?

You’ve installed premium aqua soil and a great light, so do you still need to buy bottles of liquid fertilizer? In most cases, the answer is a resounding yes.

Understanding How Plants Feed Aquatic plants generally feed in two ways: through their roots and through their leaves. Heavy root feeders, like Amazon Swords and Cryptocoryne, pull the vast majority of their nutrition directly from the substrate. For these, aqua soil and root tabs are perfect.

However, stem plants (Rotala, Ludwigia), epiphytes (Anubias, Java Fern), floating plants, and aquatic mosses feed primarily—and sometimes exclusively—directly from the water column. Since aqua soil locks most of its nutrients in the substrate, the water column itself can quickly become depleted.

The Role of Liquid Ferts An all-in-one liquid fertilizer acts as a daily or weekly vitamin for your water column. It replenishes essential macronutrients (Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus) and micronutrients (Iron, trace minerals) that get consumed by your fast-growing plants or removed during routine water changes. If you notice your new leaves growing in pale, or tiny pinholes forming on older leaves, it is almost always a sign that you need to start dosing a high-quality liquid fertilizer.
