Designing a nano tank (under 10 gallons) requires a careful eye for scale. Large, broad-leafed stem plants can quickly visually overpower a small aquarium, making it look cramped. The secret to a stunning nano aquascape is selecting stem plants with smaller, finer leaves that create a sense of vast depth.
- Rotala rotundifolia: An absolute classic. Under high light, this fine-leaved stem plant blushes with beautiful pink and red hues. It responds incredibly well to aggressive trimming, allowing you to shape dense, bushy backgrounds that fit perfectly in small spaces.
- Pearl Weed (Hemianthus glomeratus): Highly versatile and fast-growing. While it is technically a stem plant, its bright green, star-like foliage can be trained to creep along the substrate as a carpet or trimmed into tight bushes in the midground.
- Bacopa monnieri: With its small, rounded leaves and bright green coloration, this plant grows straight up and is incredibly undemanding. It thrives in low-tech tanks and doesn’t branch out too wildly, making it easy to manage in tight quarters.
When planting stems in small aquariums, remember that frequent trimming is your best friend. Cutting the stems encourages them to branch out, resulting in a lush, compact look rather than a leggy, overgrown mess.
