A decade ago, T5 high-output fluorescent bulbs were the undisputed kings of the planted tank hobby. Today, the landscape has completely shifted. If you are setting up a new tank, LED lighting is the absolute best way forward.
Why LEDs Have Taken Over
- Energy Efficiency: LEDs consume a fraction of the electricity of fluorescent tubes while outputting significantly more light.
- Lifespan: A quality LED fixture can last for 5 to 10 years without any noticeable degradation. Fluorescent bulbs, on the other hand, experience spectrum shifts and lose intensity rapidly, requiring expensive replacements every 6 to 9 months.
- Customization: Modern LED fixtures often come with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi controllers. You can program sunrise/sunset effects, dim the intensity, and dial in the exact red, green, and blue (RGB) color spectrums to make your fish and plants pop.
What to Look For When shopping for an LED, ignore “watts per gallon.” Instead, look for a fixture explicitly designed for planted tanks. It should feature a dedicated RGB or WRGB (White, Red, Green, Blue) spectrum to ensure your plants get the specific wavelengths they need for photosynthesis, particularly the blue and red spectrums.
