It’s incredibly disheartening to spend money on beautiful aquatic plants only to watch them melt away into brown mush. If you are just starting out, skip the demanding, high-tech species and stock your tank with these resilient, beginner-proof survivors.
- Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus): A staple in the hobby. It thrives in low light, tolerates a wide range of water temperatures, and doesn’t care about CO2. Like Anubias, it is an epiphyte—simply glue or tie the rhizome to a rock or piece of driftwood.
- Amazon Sword (Echinodorus amazonicus): If you want a large, bushy centerpiece plant, this is it. Amazon Swords are heavy root feeders, so simply bury a root tab in the gravel or sand right beneath them, and watch them explode in size.
- Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides): This is one of the fastest-growing beginner plants available. It has beautiful, delicate, fern-like leaves and can be planted in the substrate or left to float at the surface, where it provides excellent cover for baby fish.
- Cryptocoryne wendtii: This versatile, low-light plant comes in beautiful shades of green and bronze. While it might “melt” slightly when first introduced to your tank, the roots are incredibly tough, and it will quickly bounce back with new growth.
