If there were an award for the most indestructible aquarium plant, Anubias would easily take the trophy. For beginners, it is arguably the best plant you can start with.
Why Anubias is Bulletproof Anubias plants have thick, waxy leaves that deter most plant-eating fish, and they require very little light to survive. They do not need carbon dioxide injection, nor do they require specialized, expensive aqua soils. In fact, planting them in soil can actually kill them.
The Golden Rule of Anubias Anubias are epiphytes, meaning they grow attached to surfaces rather than buried in the ground. They have a thick green stem at their base called a rhizome. Never bury the rhizome. If you bury it in sand or gravel, it will rot, and the plant will die. Instead, use a drop of cyanoacrylate superglue or some dark cotton thread to attach the rhizome directly to your driftwood or rocks.
Because they are slow growers, they can sometimes attract spot algae on their broad leaves. Keeping your tank lighting on a strict 6-to-8-hour schedule will keep your Anubias looking pristine.
