Your aquatic plants are constantly communicating their nutritional needs; you just need to know how to read their leaves. By spotting the early warning signs of a deficiency, you can correct the imbalance before the plant melts away.
The Big Three Deficiencies
- Nitrogen (Yellowing Old Leaves): If the oldest, lowest leaves on your stem plants are turning yellow and falling off, but the top leaves look perfectly green, you need more nitrogen. The plant is cannibalizing its old leaves to support new growth.
- Potassium (Pinholes): If you notice tiny brown dots on your broad-leafed plants (like Anubias or Amazon Swords) that slowly expand into holes, your water is depleted of potassium.
- Iron (Pale New Growth): If the brand-new shoots at the top of your plants are growing in pale yellow or completely white while the older leaves stay green, the plant lacks iron. Iron is “immobile,” meaning the plant cannot move it around to support new shoots.
The Easy Fix Diagnosing the exact deficiency can be tricky, which is why we recommend using a high-quality, comprehensive all-in-one liquid fertilizer. Dosing an all-in-one solution ensures your plants get a balanced diet of macro and micronutrients, eliminating the guesswork and getting your tank back on track.
