A lush, sprawling green carpet is the ultimate goal for many aquascapers. However, carpeting plants are notoriously demanding. Choosing the right species for your specific setup is the difference between a dense lawn and a patchy, stringy mess.
High-Tech Carpets (Requires CO2 and Intense Light)
- Hemianthus callitrichoides (Cuba / HC): The holy grail of carpets. It features the smallest leaves of any carpeting plant, creating an incredibly fine texture. However, it is strictly high-tech; without massive amounts of light, CO2, and a rich aqua soil, it will simply disintegrate.
- Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis acicularis): Provides a beautiful, grassy meadow look. It spreads via underground runners. While it can survive in low-tech setups, it will rarely form a dense, uniform carpet without CO2 injection.
Low-Tech & Beginner-Friendly Carpets
- Monte Carlo (Micranthemum tweediei): Visually similar to HC Cuba, but much more forgiving. It has slightly larger leaves and stronger roots. With decent lighting and a good liquid fertilizer, Monte Carlo can successfully carpet a tank without CO2, though it will spread much slower.
- Pearl Weed (Hemianthus glomeratus): This is actually a fast-growing stem plant, but if you aggressively trim it and replant the tops, it will grow horizontally and form a thick, bright green carpet even in absolute beginner setups.
