Rotala, Ludwigia, and Other Stem Plants: Which is Best for You?

When it comes to background stem plants, Rotala and Ludwigia are the two most popular genera in the hobby. Both offer stunning reds, oranges, and pinks, but they cater to slightly different visual styles and care requirements.

Rotala: The Fine-Leafed Favorite Rotala (like Rotala rotundifolia or Rotala H’ra) is famous for its very thin, needle-like leaves.

• Best For: Nano tanks or creating a sense of massive scale and depth in larger aquariums.
• Growth Habit: It responds incredibly well to aggressive, flat-top trimming, allowing you to sculpt perfect, dense bushes.
• Requirement: To get the best reds out of Rotala, you usually need to deliberately starve the plant of nitrates while blasting it with high light and CO2.

Ludwigia: The Broad-Leafed Showstopper Ludwigia (like Ludwigia repens or Ludwigia Super Red) features much larger, broader, and more oval-shaped leaves.

• Best For: Bold, high-contrast focal points in the midground or background.
• Growth Habit: It grows thick, sturdy stems. While it can be trimmed into bushes, it often looks best when allowed to grow tall and dramatic.
• Requirement: Ludwigia is generally easier to keep red than Rotala. Many varieties, particularly ‘Super Red’, will maintain a deep crimson hue even in low-tech setups with decent lighting and standard liquid fertilization.
