While aquatic plants are generally more adaptable to water chemistry than sensitive fish, they still have a distinct “comfort zone.” Keeping your water parameters within this range will ensure rapid growth, vibrant colors, and strong root systems.
The Ideal Ranges
- Temperature (72°F – 78°F / 22°C – 26°C): Most tropical plants thrive in this range. If the water gets too hot (above 82°F), plant metabolism speeds up dramatically, causing them to burn through nutrients and CO2 faster than you can supply them, often resulting in melting and algae.
- pH (6.0 – 7.0): The vast majority of aquatic plants prefer slightly acidic water. At a lower pH, essential nutrients—especially iron—are more readily available and easier for plants to absorb. This is exactly why active aqua soils are designed to buffer the pH down to roughly 6.5.
- General Hardness / GH (4 – 8 dGH): This measures calcium and magnesium in the water. Plants need both of these secondary macronutrients to build healthy cell walls. If your water is incredibly soft (0-2 dGH), you may see twisted, stunted new growth and will need to remineralize your water.
- Carbonate Hardness / KH (1 – 4 dKH): A low KH allows you to safely inject CO2 without causing dangerous pH swings, and makes it easier for plants to access the carbon they need.
