Injecting pressurized Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is the ultimate cheat code for explosive plant growth, but finding the right balance is crucial. Too little, and your plants will be outcompeted by algae; too much, and you will suffocate your fish.
The Magic Number For a high-tech planted aquarium, the widely accepted sweet spot is 30 ppm (parts per million) of dissolved CO2. This provides maximum carbon availability for photosynthesis while remaining safe for most tropical fish and invertebrates.
How to Measure It: The Drop Checker You cannot measure CO2 accurately just by looking at your bubbles per second. You need a CO2 drop checker—a small glass bulb filled with a bromothymol blue indicator solution that sits inside your tank.
- Blue: CO2 levels are too low.
- Green: The perfect zone (roughly 30 ppm).
- Yellow: Danger! CO2 levels are too high, and your livestock is at risk of asphyxiation.
The Golden Rule of Injection Always turn your CO2 on 1 to 2 hours before your lights turn on. This ensures that the water column is saturated with 30 ppm of carbon right when the plants wake up and start photosynthesizing. Conversely, turn the CO2 off 1 hour before the lights go out, as plants do not consume carbon in the dark.
